Yugo Saso was born in Shiga, Japan. At the age of 18, he moved to Vancouver, Canada to study acting at Gastown Actors Studio, where he participated in many local theatre productions as well as independent film productions. In 1998, he moved to Taiwan where he lived for a year and a half. In 2000, Yugo received an opportunity to play a principal role in the feature film To End All Wars alongside Robert Carlyle and Kiefer Sutherland. For the next four years, he worked with former Imperial Army translator Takashi Nagase, who was the model for Yugo's role in To End All Wars, and traveled around Thailand, Myanmar, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea for the memorial services and the remains of the War dead searches.
In 2007, Yugo was cast in United Red Army, directed by Koji Wakamatsu, and played Koichi Teraoka, who was executed during the Asama-Sanso Incident. Later, Yugo was fortunate to become acquainted with Teraoka's mother, who shared her family's perspective on the incident. In 2009, Yugo played the lead role in Jitensha, which was officially selected by the 66th Venice Film Festival in the Corto Cortissimo competition. Yugo also received Best Actor at the 5th SAPPORO Shortfest. He also starred in Persimmon.
